Isopyrazam is a chiral fungicide belonging to the pyrazole carboxamide class, known for its broad-spectrum activity against various fungal pathogens. It functions primarily through the inhibition of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), a key enzyme in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, which disrupts energy production in fungal cells. Isopyrazam exhibits stereoselective bioactivity, with significant differences in efficacy among its stereoisomers. The cis-(1S,4R,9S) stereoisomer demonstrates the highest antifungal activity, particularly against Alternaria alternata and Phoma multirostrata, allowing for reduced dosages compared to the racemic mixture. This stereoselectivity is crucial for optimizing its application in agricultural settings, enhancing efficacy while minimizing environmental impact. The fungicide is typically applied as a foliar treatment to crops such as winter wheat, improving plant health and resistance to fungal infections.
