Levamisole is a synthetic imidazothiazole derivative primarily used as an anthelmintic agent, effective against nematodes such as Ascaris lumbricoides and Ancylostoma duodenale. It functions by interfering with the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor on nematode muscle, leading to depolarization and paralysis of the worm. Levamisole also has immunomodulatory properties, enhancing T-cell responses, stimulating antibody formation, and potentiating monocyte and macrophage functions. It is used in various disease entities due to its multivariant actions on different cell types. The drug is often formulated as levamisole hydrochloride for immediate-release dosage forms, where in vitro dissolution studies can serve as a surrogate for establishing in vivo bioequivalence.
