Structurally, it contains two carbonyl groups that enhance the acidity of adjacent nitrogen atoms, contributing to its electron-withdrawing properties. This compound is synthesized through radical polymerization, often utilizing magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers for selective extraction in food analysis due to its genotoxic and carcinogenic potential. Maleic hydrazide is also used in the synthesis of other chemicals such as fumaric and tartaric acids, and finds applications in various industrial fields including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and dye intermediates.
