Methomyl is an oxime carbamate insecticide first introduced in 1968, known for its broad-spectrum control of various insect classes such as Lepidoptera, Hemiptera, Homoptera, Diptera, and Coleoptera. It functions primarily by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, leading to nerve and tissue failure. Methomyl is subject to environmental degradation, with hydrolysis and oxidation being the main pathways facilitated by bacterial consortia like MF0904. This degradation is crucial for bioaugmentation in contaminated soils, enhancing methomyl removal rates. Additionally, methomyl can form oxygenated transformation products upon reaction with chlorine, retaining both direct and indirect toxicities. The development of biosensors using enzyme inhibition, such as laccase immobilized in supported ionic liquid phases, is a novel approach for methomyl detection and monitoring.
