Metsulfuron methyl is a systemic sulfonylurea herbicide developed for controlling broadleaf weeds and annual grasses in crops such as rice, corn, wheat, and barley. It functions by inhibiting the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme, which is crucial for the synthesis of branched-chain amino acids in plants, leading to their growth cessation. The chemical structure of metsulfuron methyl includes a sulfonylurea moiety, which is responsible for its herbicidal activity. Despite its high efficacy in weed control, metsulfuron methyl exhibits low toxicity to mammals, with an LD50 exceeding 5000 mg/kg in rats. Research has also explored its bioisosteric modifications to enhance herbistatic properties, and its interaction with soil microbial communities, which can affect soil health and plant growth. Additionally, studies have shown that bound residues of metsulfuron methyl in soil can lead to phytotoxic effects, impacting the growth of sensitive plant species.
