Monocytes are circulating innate immune cells that originate in the bone marrow and constitute approximately 5-10% of peripheral blood leukocytes. They play key roles in host defense through phagocytosis, cytokine production, and antigen presentation, and can differentiate into macrophages or dendritic cells upon migration into tissues. Monocytes are also important regulators of inflammation, tissue repair, and immune responses to infection and injury.
