Ninjurin 2 (NINJ2) is a gene located on chromosome 12p13.2, encoding a member of the ninjurin family, which consists of cell surface proteins involved in promoting cell-cell adhesion and nerve regeneration. NINJ2 plays a pivotal role in neural repair processes, particularly in the peripheral nervous system, where it contributes to axonal growth and the formation of new neural connections following injury. This protein is expressed in various tissues, including the nervous system and endothelial cells, and is implicated in modulating inflammatory responses and cell-cell interactions. In addition to its role in the nervous system, NINJ2 is associated with vascular biology and immune cell migration, influencing processes such as angiogenesis and leukocyte transmigration. Altered expression or mutations in NINJ2 have been studied in the context of neurodegenerative diseases and stroke, where it may affect recovery and repair mechanisms. Research continues to explore NINJ2's potential as a therapeutic target for enhancing nerve regeneration and addressing vascular and inflammatory conditions.
