NdhH is a plastid-encoded core subunit of the chloroplast NADH dehydrogenase-like (NDH) complex that localizes to the thylakoid membrane, where it forms part of the membrane arm near the plastoquinone (PQ) reduction site. In land-plant chloroplasts, NdhH is typically a ~390 aa, strongly hydrophobic integral membrane protein predicted to contain multiple transmembrane helices and conserved sequence features shared with cyanobacterial NDH-1/respiratory complex I homologs; structural analyses of the plant NDH-PSI supercomplex place NdhH adjacent to other membrane-arm components and contributing, via extramembranous loops, to shaping the PQ-binding pocket region. Functionally, NdhH supports NDH-dependent cyclic electron flow around photosystem I by enabling ferredoxin-dependent electron transfer into the PQ pool coupled to vectorial proton translocation across the thylakoid membrane, thereby strengthening the proton motive force to increase ATP production and helping balance the ATP:NADPH output of photosynthesis and protect the photosynthetic apparatus under fluctuating or stress conditions.
