Neurexin-1-beta (NRXN1-beta) is a gene that encodes the beta-isoform of the neurexin-1 protein, which is a type I membrane protein that functions as a cell adhesion molecule and receptor in the nervous system. Located on chromosome 2 in humans, the neurexin-1 gene undergoes complex alternative splicing, producing multiple isoforms, including the well-studied alpha-neurexin and beta-neurexin. Neurexins, including NRXN1-beta, are primarily involved in synapse formation and function by mediating interactions between presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons. They bind to neuroligins, another family of cell adhesion molecules, thus playing a critical role in the maintenance and regulation of synaptic specificity and neurotransmitter release. Dysregulation or mutations in NRXN1-beta have been implicated in various neurological and psychiatric disorders, including autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia, and intellectual disabilities, emphasizing the importance of this gene in brain development and function.
