Oestrone-3-glucuronide (E3G) is a significant urinary metabolite derived from oestradiol. It is primarily used as a biomarker for monitoring the fertile period in women, particularly in the context of ovulation. E3G peaks about 24 hours before ovulation, making it a crucial indicator for predicting the optimal time for conception. This conjugated form of estrone is produced through the glucuronidation process, which involves the addition of glucuronic acid to estrone, facilitating its excretion in urine. The detection and quantification of E3G are commonly performed through immunochromatographic assays, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), and chemiluminescence immunoassays. These methods have proven effective in both clinical and at-home testing environments, providing reliable measures for fertility tracking. Additionally, recent advancements have enabled the use of E3G monitoring in processes like in vitro fertilization (IVF), where its levels can predict oocyte maturation and optimize treatment protocols.
