Oncomodulin, encoded by the OCM gene located on chromosome 7p22.3, is a protein that belongs to the parvalbumin family of calcium-binding proteins. It is most prominently found in the inner ear, as well as in certain retinal cells and regenerating neurons. Oncomodulin plays a crucial role in calcium ion homeostasis, which is vital for various cellular processes, including signal transduction, cellular motility, and growth. Notably, oncomodulin has been studied for its role in promoting nerve regeneration, particularly within the central nervous system, where it enhances axonal growth and neuronal repair. This makes it a molecule of significant interest for therapeutic strategies aiming to treat nerve injuries or neurodegenerative diseases. Beyond its neuroregenerative potential, oncomodulin is also expressed in some tumor types, which initially led to its association with cancer-related studies. Current research continues to explore its dual roles in both oncology and neurobiology to better understand its functional implications across different tissues.
