Store lyophilized/reconstituted at -20°C; once reconstituted make aliquots to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Please remember to spin the tubes briefly prior to opening them to avoid any losses that might occur from material adhering to the cap or sides of the tube.
For reconstitution add 50 µL of sterile water.
Specific Species Reactivity: Malus domestica
Phytoene synthase is a plastid-localized, nuclear-encoded enzyme that accumulates within chloroplast subcompartments including the stroma and associations with thylakoid-related membranes and/or plastoglobuli depending on isozyme and allelic variation; in plants it is therefore positioned at the entry point of carotenoid production within the organelle. It is a soluble, ~40-50 kDa class I "head-to-head" prenyltransferase-like protein that typically carries an N-terminal chloroplast-targeting transit peptide and a conserved squalene/phytoene synthase catalytic core containing signature motifs required for binding the diphosphate substrate and coordinating catalysis. Functionally, phytoene synthase catalyzes the first committed and commonly rate-limiting step of carotenoid biosynthesis by converting two molecules of geranylgeranyl diphosphate into phytoene via a prephytoene diphosphate intermediate, thereby initiating formation of downstream carotenoids that support photosynthesis and photoprotection and provide precursors for signaling apocarotenoids that influence plastid development and plant physiology.
