Papaverine is an isoquinoline alkaloid derived from opium, primarily used as a vasodilator and smooth muscle relaxant, with applications in treating erectile dysfunction and as an antispasmodic during vascular surgery. The biosynthesis of papaverine involves the conversion of (S)-reticuline, followed by dehydrogenation of the 1,2-bond to yield papaverine. Recent advances in metabolic engineering have enabled the production of papaverine through heterologous expression of biosynthetic pathways, highlighting its clinical significance. Papaverine's structure consists of a benzylisoquinoline framework, contributing to its pharmacological properties. Synonyms for papaverine include tetrahydropapaverine, benzylisoquinoline, opium alkaloid, vasodilator, antispasmodic, erectile dysfunction treatment, smooth muscle relaxant, and vascular surgery agent.
