Pendimethalin is a dinitroaniline herbicide, chemically known as N-[1-ethylpropyl]-3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitrobenzenamine, primarily used for controlling broad-leaf and grassy weeds in various crops and non-crop areas. It functions as a pre-emergent herbicide, meaning it is applied before the weeds germinate. Pendimethalin binds to human serum albumin, the major transporter in human circulation, affecting its fluorescence intensity, which indicates potential interactions at the molecular level. Structurally, pendimethalin is an orange-yellow compound that can stain materials such as hair and vinyl floor coverings. It has been widely used for over 30 years and is currently under review in the European Union for its persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity properties. The biodegradation of pendimethalin in contaminated soil can be facilitated using bioslurry phase reactors under aerobic conditions, highlighting its environmental impact and the need for effective degradation methods.
