Pentadecafluorooctanoic acid, commonly known as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), is a synthetic fluorinated organic acid belonging to the group of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Structurally, PFOA consists of a non-branched chain of eight carbon atoms fully saturated with fluorine atoms, which imparts unique physicochemical properties such as high thermal stability and resistance to degradation. PFOA is primarily used in the production of fluoropolymers, including polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and is known for its persistence in the environment due to its inability to break down naturally.
