The RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) M2 gene encodes for two critical proteins, M2-1 and M2-2. The M2-1 protein is essential for viral transcription, acting as an elongation factor, ensuring the synthesis of full-length viral mRNAs. It associates non-covalently with the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase complex. Transcription regulation is influenced by the phosphorylation state of M2-1, mediated by cellular protein phosphatase 1 (PP1). In contrast, the M2-2 protein plays a significant role in regulating the balance between viral transcription and replication.
