SOBIR1 encodes a cell-surface receptor-like kinase that localizes predominantly to the plasma membrane as a single-pass transmembrane protein with an extracellular leucine-rich repeat (LRR) region, a short juxtamembrane segment, and a cytosolic serine/threonine protein kinase domain whose activation involves autophosphorylation followed by transphosphorylation within the receptor complex. Functionally, SOBIR1 acts as a constitutive coreceptor/adaptor for multiple LRR receptor-like proteins (RLPs) that lack intracellular kinase domains, thereby providing signaling competence to these receptors; upon ligand perception by the partnered RLP, SOBIR1-containing complexes recruit additional coreceptors such as BAK1/SERK3 to promote phosphorylation-dependent activation of downstream defense signaling, including hypersensitive cell death and broad pathogen resistance outputs.
