STM, also called SHOOT MERISTEMLESS, is a KNOX class homeobox transcription factor that maintains the shoot apical meristem by promoting stem cell identity and preventing premature differentiation. STM regulates hormonal balance, elevating cytokinin biosynthesis and modulating auxin and gibberellin pathways to sustain meristem activity and organ initiation competence. It acts with cofactors such as BELL proteins and antagonizes differentiation drivers to keep cells in a proliferative state, while its expression is restricted to the meristem and excluded from incipient organ primordia. Loss of STM disrupts meristem formation and shoot development, whereas misexpression alters leaf morphology and organogenesis, highlighting its central role in meristem maintenance and plant architecture.
