Sarafloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic developed for veterinary use, particularly effective in treating bacterial infections in poultry, fish, and other livestock. Structurally, sarafloxacin features a quinolone core, enriched with a fluorine atom, which enhances its antimicrobial activity by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, crucial enzymes in DNA replication and transcription processes. This mechanism of action makes sarafloxacin highly effective against a wide range of Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria. Although initially utilized to improve animal health and reduce morbidity in farmed species, sarafloxacin's use has been restricted or phased out due to concerns about antibiotic resistance and potential environmental impacts. Its residues in food products and ecosystems, alongside the emergence of resistant bacterial strains, have prompted regulatory scrutiny and the exploration of alternative treatments. Research efforts remain focused on understanding its pharmacokinetic properties and interactions to inform safer veterinary practices.
