PA1-7259 detects Streptococcus pneumoniae. This product cross-reacts with types 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 14, 18, 19 and 23. The antiserum was not absorbed and may react with related microorganisms.
PA1-7259 has been successfully used in immunofluorescence and ELISA procedures.
The PA1-7259 immunogen is a whole cell blend of numerous serotypes.
Short term storage, up to 6 months, is liquid at 4°C. For long term storage, aliquot and store at -20 °C.

There are more than 85 antigenic types of S. pneumoniae, which are determined by capsule antigens. Altough S. pneumoniae is part of the normal respiratory flora, invasion commonly results in pneumonia as well as meningitis. S. pneumoniae is protected from phagocytosis by its polysaccharide capsule which is also a prominent virulence factor. Infections can usually be treated with antibiotics, although resistant strains are emerging.
