Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as Group A Streptococcus (GAS), is a human-specific pathogen characterized by a multitude of virulence factors that contribute to its versatility in causing diseases. The genome of S. pyogenes reveals an expansive array of surface-expressed and secreted proteins that facilitate colonization, infection, and immune evasion. This includes adhesins, pili, and immune-modulatory proteins, among others. GAS is responsible for a broad spectrum of diseases such as pharyngitis, impetigo, cellulitis, and more severe invasive diseases like necrotizing fasciitis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. Furthermore, post-infection sequelae such as rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis can arise due to host immune responses. The adaptation of GAS to diverse environmental niches within the human host through these genetic determinants highlights its evolutionary success and epidemiological impact.
