Diuron is a phenylurea herbicide widely used for controlling both broadleaf and grassy weeds in agricultural settings, particularly for crops such as cotton, fruits, and sugarcane. It functions primarily by inhibiting photosynthesis in target plants. Diuron interferes with photosystem II by binding to the D1 protein, disrupting the electron transport chain, and thus preventing the conversion of light energy into chemical energy. This process effectively starves the plant of energy, leading to its death. Due to its effectiveness, diuron is also applied for weed control on non-crop areas, such as industrial sites and rights-of-way. However, its persistence in the environment and potential to contaminate water sources have raised concerns about its ecological impact, particularly on aquatic ecosystems. Studies have shown that diuron can affect non-target plant species and aquatic organisms. As a result, its use is subject to regulatory controls in many countries to mitigate environmental risks. Ongoing research is focused on understanding its degradation pathways and developing bioremediation strategies.
