Tilmicosin is a 16-membered macrolide antibiotic synthesized semi-synthetically from a hydrolyzed derivative of tylosin, primarily used in veterinary medicine for livestock and poultry. It exhibits strong antibacterial activity, excellent pharmacokinetic properties, and immune-enhancing effects. Tilmicosin functions as a potent inhibitor of biofilm formation in Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, even at sub-minimal inhibitory concentrations. Despite its broad-spectrum antibacterial efficacy, its clinical application is limited by low water solubility, resulting in incomplete absorption and low bioavailability. To address this, complexation with gamma-cyclodextrin has been explored to enhance its solubility and bioavailability. Additionally, tilmicosin has been studied for its drug-drug interaction potential, particularly with enrofloxacin, which affects its metabolism and residue profiles in vivo and in vitro.
