Triclopyr is a selective systemic herbicide primarily used for controlling woody plants and broadleaf weeds in various environments such as rights-of-way, industrial areas, forestry, railways, rangeland, home lawns, and permanent grass pastures. Structurally, triclopyr is often formulated as a triethylamine salt, which allows for rapid absorption through green bark, leaves, and roots, facilitating its distribution throughout the plant. Functionally, triclopyr disrupts plant growth by mimicking plant hormones, leading to uncontrolled growth and eventual plant death. In terms of environmental fate, triclopyr is nonpersistent in surface water and exhibits limited mobility and low to medium persistence in soil, dissipating through pathways like photolysis, plant metabolism, and microbial degradation. Despite its effectiveness, triclopyr poses risks to soil microbial communities and requires careful management to mitigate environmental impacts.
