Trifluralin is a selective pre-emergent herbicide primarily used in agriculture to control weeds in various fruit and vegetable crops. It belongs to the dinitroaniline chemical class, which disrupts cell division by inhibiting microtubule formation. Trifluralin is formulated as an 80% dry flowable product, which has minimal irritation effects but is labeled as a dermal sensitizer. Recent research has focused on synthesizing trifluralin analogues to enhance its antileishmanial properties, with some analogues showing increased activity against Leishmania species compared to standard treatments like miltefosine. Additionally, trifluralin analogues have been incorporated into lipid-based nanoformulations, such as liposomes and solid lipid nanoparticles, to improve drug delivery and target infection sites more effectively.
