UBA1 (Ubiquitin-Like Modifier Activating Enzyme 1) encodes a key E1 enzyme that initiates the ubiquitin-proteasome system, which controls protein degradation and turnover in cells. UBA1 activates ubiquitin in an ATP-dependent manner and transfers it to E2 conjugating enzymes, enabling the tagging of target proteins for degradation or other regulatory processes. It is essential for cell viability and has been implicated in disorders such as X-linked spinal muscular atrophy and VEXAS syndrome when mutated.
