Urushiol is a mixture of organic compounds with catechol as their base, typically found in plants of the family Anacardiaceae, such as poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. Structurally, urushiol contains a catechol backbone with a variable alkyl side chain; the length and degree of unsaturation in the side chain can vary, contributing to its potency. Functionally, urushiol is a potent allergen and irritant. When it comes into contact with the skin, it undergoes autoxidation and binds to skin proteins, forming conjugates that trigger an immune response. This immune response typically results in contact dermatitis, characterized by itching, redness, and blistering within 12 to 48 hours after exposure. The severity of the allergic reaction can vary widely among individuals.
