Target Information
eIF4A is a DEAD box RNA helicase that unwinds secondary structures in messenger RNA to facilitate ribosome scanning during translation initiation in plants. It functions within the eIF4F complex together with eIF4E, which binds the mRNA cap, and eIF4G, which scaffolds initiation factors and recruits the 43S preinitiation complex. By resolving RNA structures, eIF4A supports efficient translation of messages with structured 5 prime untranslated regions and contributes to growth, stress responses, and developmental regulation. Its ATP dependent helicase activity and interaction with regulatory proteins modulate initiation rates, and plants commonly encode multiple eIF4A isoforms with overlapping but condition specific expression. Inhibitors or mutations affecting eIF4A can shift translational selectivity and impact hormone signaling, defense, and adaptation to environmental stress.
