Pro-HGF Activator (HGFAC) is a gene that encodes the Hepatocyte Growth Factor Activator, a serine protease involved in the activation of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). HGF is a critical growth factor that regulates cell growth, cell motility, and morphogenesis by activating the c-Met receptor. The HGFAC protein is synthesized as an inactive zymogen, known as pro-HGF activator, which requires proteolytic cleavage to become active. Once activated, HGFAC can convert inactive pro-HGF into its active form, thereby facilitating various physiological processes such as tissue regeneration, wound healing, and organ development. Dysregulation of HGFAC activity has been associated with pathological conditions, including tumor progression and metastasis, liver fibrosis, and cardiovascular diseases. Due to its significant role in activating HGF and influencing cellular behaviors, HGFAC is an important target for research aimed at developing therapeutic strategies for diseases involving aberrant cell growth and repair mechanisms.
