1-Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) is a synthetic auxin commonly used in agricultural and biological sciences to promote plant growth and enhance the storage life and quality of fruits. Structurally, NAA is a derivative of naphthalene with an acetic acid moiety, which allows it to mimic the natural plant hormone indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Functionally, NAA interacts with phospholipids in biological membranes, affecting both plant and animal cells. It has been studied for its electrochemical behavior, showing irreversible anodic signals in acidic mediums, which are analyzed using advanced techniques like gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. NAA is also utilized in vitro cell culturing to reduce the doubling time of cultured cells, demonstrating its versatility in scientific research and industrial applications.
