Cefquinome is a fourth-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used exclusively in veterinary medicine, known for its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. It is particularly effective against equine bacterial pathogens such as Streptococcus zooepidemicus, Staphylococcus spp., Actinobacillus equuli, Rhodococcus spp., Pseudomonas spp., E. coli, and other Enterobacteriaceae. Structurally, cefquinome is characterized by the presence of a 2-amino-5-thiazolyl group, contributing to its efficacy against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The antibiotic functions by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, a mechanism typical of beta-lactam antibiotics, thereby leading to bacterial cell death. Cefquinome's pharmacokinetic properties and its impact on gut microbiota resistance are critical considerations in its application in food-producing animals, ensuring effective treatment while mitigating antibiotic resistance.
