Cyclamate, a synthetic sweetener, is primarily synthesized through the sulfonation of cyclohexylamine with chlorosulfonic acid, followed by treatment with barium hydroxide and sulfuric acid. This process yields cyclamate salts, such as sodium cyclamate, which are used in various food products. Structurally, cyclamate exists in its zwitterionic form in the crystalline state, with coordination through the nitrogen atom of the NH group and the oxygen of the sulfamate group (OSO2). Cyclamate complexes have been studied for their anti-cancer and anti-microbial activities, showing potential therapeutic benefits. Long-term consumption of cyclamate has been linked to changes in metabolic functions and increased oxidative stress, particularly in diabetic patients. Cyclamate is also known for its role in artificial sweeteners, with various salts like potassium and ammonium cyclamate being utilized for different applications.
