Ethoxyquin is a synthetic antioxidant commonly used in animal feeds and some food products to prevent oxidative degradation, which helps maintain nutritional quality and extend shelf life. It is particularly utilized in the fish meal industry to prevent the rancidity of essential fatty acids, thereby preserving the freshness and color of feeds. Structurally, ethoxyquin is a quinoline derivative, and its antioxidant properties are attributed to its ability to donate hydrogen atoms, thereby stabilizing free radicals. Beyond animal feed, ethoxyquin is also employed in certain agricultural applications to enhance the storage life of fruits, such as apples and pears, by minimizing surface discoloration. Despite its efficacy, the use of ethoxyquin has raised safety concerns, prompting regulatory reviews and restrictions due to potential health risks, including links to liver and skin issues in animals and possible carcinogenic effects. As a result, its usage has been limited or banned in several regions, leading to a search for alternative antioxidants that are safe and effective.
