GNA11 and GNAQ are genes that encode the alpha subunits of the G-protein family involved in intracellular signaling pathways. GNA11 specifically encodes the alpha subunit of the G11 protein, whereas GNAQ encodes that of the Gq protein. These subunits are integral to the function of heterotrimeric G proteins, which consist of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits. Mutations in these genes have been linked to various vascular and pigmentary diseases, such as Sturge-Weber syndrome. Furthermore, they are implicated in the development and progression of uveal melanoma, a form of eye cancer, with specific mutations in codon 209 of GNAQ having been identified as significant contributors. Differential expression profiles between GNAQ and GNA11-mutated cells reveal substantial differences in gene regulation, highlighting their distinct roles in disease manifestation and progression. Research continues to explore these genes for potential therapeutic targets to address related malignancies and other associated disorders.
