HGF alpha is the N-terminal subunit of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), produced after proteolytic cleavage of the inactive precursor pro-HGF. It contains domains important for binding to the c-MET receptor, contributing to activation of signaling pathways that regulate cell growth, motility, and tissue repair. Although it associates with the beta subunit for full activity, the alpha chain plays a key role in receptor recognition.
