HIV1/2 p24 refers to the p24 protein, a major core protein of the HIV-1 and HIV-2 viruses, which is encoded by the gag gene. The p24 protein forms the viral capsid that encases the viral RNA and is highly conserved across different HIV strains. The detection of p24 antigen is crucial for diagnosing and monitoring HIV infection, particularly during the acute phase when viral RNA and antibodies may not yet be detectable. Assays for p24 antigen, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) and rapid tests, are commonly used in clinical settings to identify early HIV infection and to monitor disease progression and response to antiretroviral therapy (ART). p24 testing is especially valuable in early diagnosis, allowing for timely intervention and management of HIV infection. Additionally, p24 antigen assays are employed in blood screening and have applications in research to study viral dynamics and the efficacy of therapeutic interventions.
