Lymphocyte activation gene 1 (LAX1) is located on chromosome 2p16.1 and encodes an immunoregulatory protein that is expressed primarily on lymphocytes, including T cells, B cells, and other immune cells. LAX1 functions as a negative regulator of lymphocyte activation and signaling, playing a crucial role in maintaining immune homeostasis by attenuating excessive immune responses. It acts by modulating signaling pathways that are initiated through surface receptors on lymphocytes, thereby influencing lymphocyte proliferation, cytokine production, and cellular responses during immune activation. Dysregulation of LAX1 expression or function can lead to autoimmune diseases due to impaired control of immune activation. Research into LAX1 focuses on its potential for therapeutic modulation in autoimmune disorders and its role in balancing immune responses, which is essential for maintaining health and preventing pathogenic immune conditions.
