MBNL3 (Muscleblind-like protein 3) is an RNA-binding protein involved in the regulation of alternative splicing. The gene encodes several isoforms, including MBNL3 isoform G, which has distinct roles in RNA metabolism and splicing. MBNL3 isoform G contains functional domains necessary for RNA binding and splicing regulation, which are separate from its RNA-binding zinc finger domains. The expression of MBNL3 is particularly noted in proliferating cells where it can inhibit the transcription of muscle-specific genes, thereby impacting myogenesis. This isoform has also been implicated in the regulation of muscle regeneration; knockout models of MBNL3 show impaired muscle regeneration and delayed response to injury. The nuanced regulation by MBNL3 isoform G suggests its importance in muscle biology and its involvement in RNA processing complexities that underpin muscle development and repair.
