Plasmodium falciparum is one of four species of Plasmodium which causes malaria in humans. Despite advances in the treatment of malaria, the disease remains one of the most important infectious diseases affecting humans. Malaria is the cause of approximately 2.5 million deaths per year with 200 million to 500 million new cases each year. The treatment of malaria has become more difficult with the emergence of drug resistant strains of Plasmodium. In particular, the widespread resistance of Plasmodium falciparum to chloroquine, one of the most effective dugs, has spurred the development of alternative drugs for the treatment of malaria.
