SOC1 encodes a plant MIKC-type MADS-box transcription factor that functions in the nucleus as a key integrator of environmental and endogenous flowering cues at the shoot apex. The gene produces a modular protein with an N-terminal MADS DNA-binding domain followed by an intervening region and a K-box (keratin-like) coiled-coil domain that supports dimerization/complex formation typical of type II MADS proteins, enabling binding to CArG-box cis-elements in target promoters. Biologically, SOC1 promotes the transition from vegetative to reproductive development by integrating inputs from photoperiod and temperature/vernalization pathways as well as gibberellin signaling, with its transcription activated by CONSTANS primarily through FLOWERING LOCUS T and repressed by FLOWERING LOCUS C via direct promoter binding; once induced, SOC1 cooperates with other MADS factors to directly activate floral meristem identity genes such as LEAFY, thereby advancing flowering and coordinating early floral developmental programs.
