Hand sanitizer

Alcohol-based hand sanitizer has been listed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an alternative to washing hands with soap and water for hand hygiene since 2002.

In response to the recent coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changed guidelines to allow entities other than drug manufacturers to produce hand sanitizer products during the public health emergency.

Despite the relatively simple formulations and preparation protocols, the health and safety of consumers is dependent upon adequate quality assurance and control measures for both new and existing manufacturers.
