Upcycled composite polymer behavior analysis to ameliorate tensile properties

This white paper presents a collaborative study between Thermo Fisher Scientific, Ansys, Waygate Technologies, 3Dmagination, and the Institute for Polymer Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland. 

 

The study focuses on the experimental and numerical characterization of recycled short carbon fiber-reinforced polyamide 11 (rCF-PA11) composites fabricated by 3D printing. These 3D printed samples were characterized by computed tomography and associated 3D image analysis software.

 

Mechanical tests were combined with modeling to predict the elastic properties and nonlinear response of the composites beyond the elastic regime. 

 

In situ tensile testing was performed in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the results of the test analyzed to quantify surface deformation.

 

By promoting the use of upcycled materials and by enabling accurate characterization, this study supports more sustainable manufacturing practices and highlights pathways for advancing the industrial adoption of eco-friendly composites.
