Benzoic acid is an aromatic carboxylic acid naturally present in plant and animal tissues, and can also be produced by microorganisms. It is commonly used as an antibacterial and antifungal preservative and as a flavoring agent in the food industry, due to its antimicrobial activity primarily against yeasts and molds. Benzoic acid can exist in its salt and esterified forms as benzoates, which are more soluble in water than the free acid form. The compound is also employed as a basic moiety in the chemical synthesis of various biologically active compounds, such as furosemide, tetracaine, and bumetanide. Its derivatives, including sodium benzoate, are widely used in industrial and pharmaceutical applications.
