Bisoxatin is a stimulant laxative that enhances intestinal muscle motility and inhibits the absorption of electrolytes and water within the intestine. It is clinically approved for treating habitual constipation and dolichocolon. Bisoxatin acetate, a derivative, maintains the same core pharmacological structure and is marketed under the tradename Wylaxine in Belgium. It is used for constipation treatment and colon preparation for surgical procedures. The compound belongs to the class of organic compounds known as diphenylmethanes, characterized by a methane moiety with two phenyl groups. Long-term use of stimulant laxatives like Bisoxatin is generally not recommended beyond four weeks due to potential safety concerns.
