Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) primarily used in veterinary medicine to relieve pain and inflammation in animals. It functions by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), which are involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins, thus reducing inflammation and pain. Carprofen's molecular structure allows it to interact with lipid bilayers, influencing its orientation and position within the membrane interface, which is crucial for its docking to target enzymes like gamma-secretase. Recent studies have explored carprofen analogues as potential sirtuin inhibitors, combining its chemical features with other compounds to enhance therapeutic effects, such as increasing acetylation levels of proteins like p53 and alpha-tubulin. Additionally, efforts to improve carprofen's solubility have led to its intercalation into structures like Zn2Al LDH, enhancing its bioavailability. These advancements highlight carprofen's versatility in therapeutic applications beyond its traditional use.
