Cefoperazone is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic known for its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, particularly effective against gram-negative organisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and some anaerobic bacteria including Bacteroides fragilis. It is administered parenterally, either intravenously or intramuscularly, and is often combined with sulbactam to enhance its efficacy against beta-lactamase-producing strains. The antibiotic functions by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death. Cefoperazone is structurally characterized by a beta-lactam ring, and its minimal inhibitory concentrations are influenced by high inoculum concentrations of beta-lactamase-producing strains. It is used in treating infections in various body locations, including the respiratory tract, abdomen, skin, and female genital tracts. However, it can cause hypoprothrombinemia and bleeding due to its methylthiotetrazole side chain. The addition of sulbactam extends its spectrum to include Acinetobacter species. It is important to note that cefoperazone's efficacy and safety have been compared to other cephalosporins in treating bacterial infections, demonstrating its clinical utility.
