Chlorpheniramine, also known as chlorphenamine, is a first-generation H1 antihistamine that has been widely used since the 1950s for the treatment of allergic conditions due to its potent antihistamine properties. It functions as a histamine-H1 receptor antagonist, effectively managing symptoms associated with upper respiratory allergies. Chlorpheniramine has also been identified as a selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), with notable activity on serotonergic and noradrenergic neurons, comparable to amitriptyline and imipramine.
