Diazinon is an organophosphate insecticide that has been widely used for pest control in agriculture and landscaping. It functions by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme essential for the breakdown of acetylcholine in the nervous system. This inhibition leads to an accumulation of acetylcholine at nerve endings, causing continuous nerve impulse transmission, which results in paralysis and death of the targeted pests. Diazinon was commonly applied to control a variety of insects, including those that affect crops, livestock, and turf grasses. Due to its broad-spectrum activity, it was popular in both agricultural and residential settings.
