Dicamba is a benzoic acid herbicide, specifically 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid, widely utilized as a postemergent broadleaf herbicide on lawns, grasslands, and various crops. Its chemical structure allows for effective control of broadleaf weeds, yet it is prone to leaching and volatilization, posing risks to neighboring crops and environments. Dicamba's low toxicity is evidenced by oral LD50 values ranging from 566 to 3000 mg/kg in various animals, including rats and rabbits. Recent studies have explored its anaerobic degradation in paddy fields, revealing novel catabolic pathways, while its impact on microbial communities in soil has been noted, altering microbial diversity and composition. Innovative nano-formulations are being developed to mitigate its environmental impact by controlling its leaching and volatilization. Synonyms for dicamba include 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid, Banvel, Diablo, Oracle, Vanquish, Vision, Clarity, and Sterling.
