Dieldrin is a synthetic organochlorine insecticide known for its persistence in the environment and its hydrophobic nature. It was primarily used on crops and is known to inhibit the central nervous system, causing convulsions in humans at high concentrations. Dieldrin is readily absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, and skin, with two major metabolic pathways in mammals: direct oxidation by cytochrome oxidases, resulting in 9-hydroxydieldrin, and epoxide ring opening by epoxide hydrases, resulting in 6,7-trans-dihydroxydihydroaldrin. Despite being banned in many countries, dieldrin remains a concern due to its presence in soil and its potential for bioaccumulation and transport through the food chain, particularly in trees like poplar and willow. Bioremediation strategies, including phytoremediation and rhizoremediation, are being explored to mitigate its environmental impact.
